What is a the "Kanji Grade"
In 1981, the Japanese Ministry of Education published the"Joyo kanji" list: This is the official list of the 1945 most common kanji characters. This list contains the "basic kanji" that are needed for everyday life. Japanese children have to learn all 1945 of these kanji before they can graduate from high school.

The first 1,006 kanji comprise Grades 1 to 6, which are taught to Japanese elementary school children in grades 1 through 6.
